Whirlpool Dryer Showing F1? What the Code Means and What to Do

An F1 code on a Whirlpool dryer can be alarming, especially when the dryer will not start. Here is what it usually means and what you can try before calling.

What F1 usually means

On most Whirlpool dryers, an F1 code (shown as F01 or F1 E1, depending on the model) points to a problem with the main electronic control board. The control has detected an internal fault and stopped the dryer to be safe. Always check your owner’s manual or the tech sheet for your exact model.

Try a reset first

  • Turn the dryer off and unplug it, or switch off its breaker.
  • Wait at least 5 minutes.
  • Plug it back in and start a short cycle.
  • If the code does not come back, the fault may have been a one-time power glitch, like a surge or brownout.

If the code comes back

A code that returns after a reset usually means the control board needs to be diagnosed. A technician will also check the wiring and connections, because a loose connection or moisture can cause the same code. Testing first avoids replacing a board that was not the problem.

Protect the new board

Power surges are a common cause of control board failures. Plugging the dryer into a properly wired outlet, and protecting your home from surges, can help the repair last.
