Whirlpool Washer Won't Drain? 6 Common Causes and What You Can Check

You open the lid or door and the clothes are sitting in a tub of water. It is one of the most common calls we get in San Antonio, and the good news is that many causes are simple. Here is what usually stops a Whirlpool washer from draining, what you can safely check yourself, and when it is time to call a technician.

First: stay safe

  • Unplug the washer before you check anything.
  • Have towels and a shallow pan ready. A full tub can hold several gallons of water.
  • If the water is hot, let it cool first.

1. A clogged drain pump filter (front-load washers)

Most Whirlpool front-load washers have a small access door at the bottom front corner. Behind it is a filter that catches coins, hair ties, buttons and lint before they reach the pump. When it fills up, water cannot get out. Drain the water through the small hose next to it (if your model has one), then unscrew the filter, clean it and put it back hand-tight. Your owner’s manual shows the exact steps for your model.

2. A kinked or clogged drain hose

Pull the washer out carefully and look at the gray or black drain hose on the back. A hose that got pinched when the washer was pushed against the wall is a very common cause. Also check that the hose is not pushed too far down into the standpipe, and that a sock or lint has not clogged the end.

3. A clogged house drain

If water backs up out of the standpipe or a nearby floor drain while the washer is draining, the problem is in the house plumbing, not the washer. That is a job for a plumber.

4. A failed drain pump

If the filter and hose are clear but you hear a humming sound and no water moves, or you hear nothing at all during the drain part of the cycle, the drain pump may be jammed or burned out. Something small can also get past the filter and lock up the pump impeller. Pumps are a common replacement part.

5. A lid switch or door lock problem

Many Whirlpool washers will not drain or spin unless the control can confirm the lid or door is locked. If the lid lock light keeps blinking, or the washer stops right before the spin, the lid switch, lid lock or door lock assembly may be failing.

6. An error code on the display

Many Whirlpool models show a drain error code. For example, newer front-load models often show F9 E1 (long drain) and some older Duet models show F21. Codes vary by model, so check your manual. Write down exactly what the display shows. It tells a technician where to start and saves time on the service call.

When to call a technician

Call for service if the filter and hose are clear and the washer still will not drain, if you hear grinding or humming from the pump, if the lid lock keeps failing, or if the same error code comes back. Those usually mean a part needs to be tested and replaced.
